Be Worth Imitating is a social artistic movement focused on inspiring young people to do more and be more by exposing them to successful people who are within reach in their own communities. Children will emulate the images, attitudes, and the activities that are presented to them. While celebrities, professional athletes and entertainers can be captivating for our children, Be Worth Imitating attempts to balance their point-of-view by presenting ordinary people who have done or continue to do extraordinary things on a daily basis.
Often, young people are presented with negative media depictions of urban culture. These depictions can reinforce the dysfunctional habits and attitudes that accompany any community challenged by the ravages of poverty and historical discrimination. My project will display a positive representation of what it means to be a professional success, civically responsible, spiritually active, family-oriented . . . in short, worth imitating.
